However, the potential for  damage is high in sports because of very repetitive movement patterns, speed, physical contact or sudden strains being placed on joints not designed to handle them or not used to them.

Osteoworks diagnoses and treats people with sports injuries. Many injuries may not involve significant damage, but can still cause significant pain and result in uncomfortable or undesirable changed movement patterns.

Is your injury not getting better?

Why bother with treatment?
The human body is great at healing itself, but often it needs some help. Not only does the injured joint itself benefit from treatment, but so do any resulting compensations  for the original injury.

For example, a knee or ankle injury can cause the sufferer to put more weight on the other leg. Not only can this create problems with the good leg or in the lower back, but reduced use of the affected side can lead to reduced mobility in the injured joint — even when the pain has gone. This helps set the scene for recurrent injury.
 


A case study
A young teenager split open his knee while skateboarding and was on crutches for 2 weeks.  His mother said his leg had stiffened up during this time & had been visibly affecting his movement.  When he returned to football 3 weeks later, he developed groin pain following the game and running became painful after that

It seems likely that the stiffness in the leg from the 2 weeks immobilization set him up for this injury, which was a case of an inflamed structure (bursitis) under the hip flexor (the psoas muscle).  Unsurprisingly, this was not the only tight muscle on that side, which demonstrates the generally negative effects of immobilization on the body.

The hip flexor had probably tightened up because on crutches the natural position  to hold the thigh in is slightly flexed, i.e. with it hanging forward of the body.

In this case anti inflammatory medication was a great help, and this was used together with some stretches we advised.

 

Optimum healing for sports injuries is important
Damaged muscles and ligaments release inflammatory substances which cause pain and shortening of tissues around a joint. Scar tissue is also less elastic than undamaged muscle, especially if the joint is immobile for long periods.

This is why restoring proper mobility as soon as possible is so important.It is also important because movement is essential to keeping the lubricating fluid in the joint from losing its correct consistency & becoming too 'sticky'.  Improved movement also keeps the surrounding tissues well drained and supplied with the blood and nutrients it needs.

 
How we can help
When a joint is strained, all of the structures in the joint can be affected. This not only includes the ligaments, but the muscles and the bony alignment or mechanics of the joint.

If the mechanics of the joint have been affected, then just working on the muscles or ligaments often will not be enough as the pain will return and the injury will grumble on.

Osteopaths work to restore normal joint mechanics and encourage maximum mobility with minimum discomfort. We do this by gently moving the joints, correcting any mis-alignments and stretching the surrounding muscles and tissues. This improves circulation, drainage & nutrition to the area. It also helps break the cycle of pain & reduced use.
