Autism

Autism encompasses a variety of names viz. autism spectrum, autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or autism spectrum conditions (ASC), with the word autistic sometimes replacing autism. It can be described is a spectrum of psychological conditions characterised by widespread abnormalities of social interactions and communication, as well as severely restricted interests and highly repetitive behaviour.

It is now thought that 2 - 6 children per 1000 exhibit some signs of ASD. Although the cause in not known and best forms of treatment can be contentious, combinations of behavioural therapies and diet can help. In some children osteopathy can be an important part of the management program particularly where there has been known birth trauma.
