Does your child have difficulty going to sleep at night and complain of lying in bed for hours before going to sleep?
Children can have over- stimulated nervous systems which mean they are unable to ‘switch off’ and go to sleep. Establishing a good bedtime routine can help this. Many need a wind down time before going to sleep. Turn all screens such as TV or ipods etc off one hour before the child goes to bed. Your child can take a bath/shower or play in their rooms for a while.
Read to your child. This not only helps them to relax but helps to develop a love of stories and reading in the child. It is also a time that the child can have your attention - a rare event in today's busy world.
Avoid foods that are stimulating such as sweets, sugary drinks or contains artificial flavors or colourings. Some children may have sensitivities to certain foods such as dairy or wheat which stimulate their brain and make it difficult for them to go to sleep.
If your child is still having difficulty going to sleep then osteopathy may help to correct this. Gentle treatment to the child's spine and nervous system may help to calm the child so that they are able to relax and sleep.
